So we are just back from a very productive three days in Berlin. It was only my second time in this great city and it reminds me that I need to go back with some free time and explore. We attended the Digital Innovators Summit which happens each year, bringing together publishing executives from all over Europe.
The program was full of great speakers who are driving innovation and new thinking at publishing organizations all over the world. People like David Nussbaum, CEO and Chairman of F&W Media, who’s presentation Evolve, Change and Transform – from Print Publishing to E-commerce told of how they transformed an traditional publishing organization to a commerce and content company.
Natasha Christie-Miller, CEO of EMAP the B2B publisher in the UK, told of how they had transformed their business from a traditional print organization to a content-centric subscription business.
Another highlight of the event was the launch of the Innovation 2015 Word Report, by John Wilpers and Juan Señor from Innovation Media Consulting. The presentation and the report the offer the best examples of recent innovations in the magazine industry.
I was also fortunate to have an opportunity to present on Monday. I talked about how well positioned B2B and B2C publishing organizations are to build online learning businesses. Whether it is leveraging content from print products, digital products or event programming, publishers have unparalleled access to expertise and content. We discussed how publishers can build profitable online learning business very quickly with low up-front capital investment. We touched briefly on the type of business models that are being created in online learning and the success we are seeing.
We were really energized about the level of innovation and new business models being sprung from organizations that started out as traditional publishers, start-up investments, gaming, video programming, partnerships, commerce and much more. It will be fun to keep an eye on some of the projects being launched in 2015.
The event was top-notch and hosted and organized by FIPP, VDZ and emediaSF. I highly recommend attending, great speakers, super location and event space and a very engaged audience of senior-level publishers.
